I know there are lot of the original USBPRe's out there in the Smaart-using community so wanted to share a couple of pieces of information that have recently come our way regarding using them with recent Windows OS versions.
Windows Vista, 32-bit Versions
Drivers are available for 32-bit versions of Windows Vista however the driver will install by default configured as a monaural device. Instructions on how to resolve this are included in the driver installation instructions for Windows Vista at www.usbpre.com (http://www.usbpre.com).
Windows 7, 32-bit Versions
The Windows Vista Drivers for the USBPRe seem to work just fine for 32-bit versions of Windows 7, provided that you install the ASIO-enabled version of the driver. Even though I generally use the Wave drivers for stereo devices on Windows, the driver didn't work for me when I installed the WDM-only version. But I've had no problems with the wave drivers installed by the ASIO-enable version of the driver. I didn't even have to jump through any extra hoops to get Windows to see it as a stereo device.
Windows 7 and Vista, 64-bit Versions
Neither the wave or ASIO drivers supplied by Sound Devices for the USBPre will work any 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Vista. However I have just heard from an alert Smaart user that there exists a third-party ASIO driver that works with the USBPre on Windows 7-64 and possibly Vista 64 as well. The commercial version of the drivers costs around USD 56 (EUR 44) as I write this and there's a demo version available that you can try before you buy.
More info is available here: https://www.usb-audio.com/get-the-driver.asp
I currently do not know of any solution for using the USBPre on any 64-bit version of Windows with versions of Smaart previous to v.6, which did not support the ASIO audio API. But if you are using Smaart 6 or 7, that may be a way to get a few more miles out of your trusty USBPre.

In order to successfully run ASIO4ALL, you need:
- A WDM-compatible operating system, such as Win98SE/ME/2k/XP/2003/XP64 or Windows Vista x86/x64.
- A WDM-driver for your audio hardware. (Under Win2k/XP/Vista... this is implicit, not so under Win98SE/WinME.)
- A couple minutes of your time and a little bit of luck.
What ASIO4ALL will NOT do:
- Replace your existing sound card drivers or mess with them in any way.
- Install any kernel mode components that could potentially affect the stability of your system.
- 'Overclock', or otherwise operate your audio hardware in ways that could potentially be harmful and/or void your warranty, except, of course, in cases where the manufacturer of your hardware has specifically stated that the use of ASIO 4 ALL would void your warranty indeed.
Note: Requires a WDM-driver for your audio hardware.
